Seems to me that GPU bitcoin miners are already obsolete - have been for a LONG time. SHA256 requires ASIC’s to make any headway at all.
Up until maybe 6-8 months ago you could still mine Scrypt based Alt-Coins and make a little profit with GPU’s. But that has all but evaporated with increasing difficulty levels.
The rig I had running a year ago had 4 Radeon 7850’s in it overclocked to give 400kH/s each - 1.6MH/s total. During the price spike about this time last year I was making about $30 a day mining alt-coins (LiteCoin, WorldCoin, and later DogeCoin). However by early spring that shrank to just a few dollars a day. I didn’t need to heat my house with the mining rig anymore so I shut it down.
A quick check of the profitability of my old 720 watt mining rig at coinwarz.com reveals that the best I could hope to mine right now would be about 10 cents a day in altcoins. Forget that. All I’d be doing is jacking up my electric bill by about $60 a month.
The only way to make any profit on bitcoin (or altcoins) right now is with an ASIC mining rig and very cheap or “free” electricity paid for by someone else.
BTW - I left a box of about 300 BitCoin pamplets at TheSpace on Wed night. If the group is still looking to promote bitcoin, you could rubber stamp the Makespace website, address, etc on them and leave them around town.
